Arverni

A Gallic tribe from what is now called the Auvergne, which was named for the tribe. Their "capital" was Gergovia. Their initial conquering was in 121 BCE, when their king Bituitus was taken captive. However, they still remained a threat for the next seventy-five years. Their most famous prince was Vercingetorix, who made the last major rebellion against the Roman occupation.

Their patron god was Mercury Arvernorix ("King of the Arverni"), though only one inscription survives, at Miltenberg in Lower Franconia.
